4 Things I Learnt Hating Bookmarks

Hating bookmarking was not how it started. Once I loved them, I loved being organised, knowing that I could find that awesome piece of information again, hoarding it away for later. But as time went on I began to hate bookmarking.

Old School Bookmarking

1. They Must Synch

Sure that problem is solved now, but it wasn’t always so. Every time I got a new machine, every time I went to work, my bookmarks left me.

2. I Do Not Remember Web Page Titles

The bookmark is there, lurking in the crevasses of folders I have created. I knew because I added it only a few days early. It sounded like that one, maybe that is it … stuff it I’ll just google for it again.

Bookmarks do not work the way my mind remembers.

3. Folders Are Not A Good Organizing Structure

Seeing a Folder with more than 10 bookmarks in it did not feel good, my OCD needs were not being satisfied. I had to either cull the unnecessary ones, or divide them into more folders.

4. They Are Not Really Worth It

This realization is the one that took me the longest to realize. Given the total amount of time I spent bookmarking sites, on those occasions you do need to visit a site again just google it.

What is a Cyber Inquest?

Firstly, it is not an inquest into dead websites. Although I’m sure that would be quite interesting.

Cyber Inquest is any research that you do on the internet. Anytime you “Google It”, you are doing a cyber inquest.

I want to better understand why and how people currently do their online research. Ultimately I believe improvements can be made, through better tools, education, and support. And I want to connect with you, because I know you have some great ideas and knowledge that can help.

My goal is to make it easier to collect, share and remember your internet research. And of course, I’ll write about it here.
